It’s normal for babies to lose weight after birth. Fortunately, they usually gain back the weight they lose within a few weeks. Babies should gain between 6 and 8 ounces weekly in the first few months of life. Weight gain varies based on a number of factors, but it’s just as important to be sure your baby is not overweight as it is to be sure he or she isn’t underweight.
Get height and weight at your baby’s scheduled checkups, and plot your baby’s growth on a growth chart.
Your baby’s growth should follow the same curve through the first year. If your baby’s growth jumps to a new curve because of gaining or losing weight, you need to talk to your doctor.
Your new baby’s stomach can only hold a small amount of milk. If you feed your baby the amounts shown below every few hours your baby should be full.
