Conroe Family Medicine Residency Program

Curriculum

In the outpatient setting, residents work in care teams that reflect real-life practice. They include faculty physicians, resident physicians from all levels of training, medical assistants, support staff, and a continuity panel of patients. Residents actively participate in team-based QI projects and team leadership throughout their residency.

All inpatient training occurs at HCA Hospital–Conroe, where residents work closely with our community of specialists and subspecialists. Residents work directly with our consulting physicians during rotations and longitudinally throughout residency to provide an exceptional clinical experience and training.

The curriculum is designed to prepare the residents to be competent and capable physicians. The chart below reflects the overall three-year curriculum, including thirteen four-week rotations each academic year. There is flexibility as to which year some rotations can be taken. Residents are encouraged to review rotation schedules and chosen electives with their faculty advisors.

The Residency Program’s curricular elements have been developed to prepare the resident to become certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and to meet the requirements of the Family Medicine Review Committee (FM-RC). The chart below reflects the overall three-year curriculum with 13 four-week rotations each academic year. There is some flexibility as to the year during which some rotations may be taken. Residents are encouraged to review rotation schedules and chosen electives with their faculty advisor.

Rotations

Our comprehensive curriculum not only delivers all essential rotations required by an accredited family medicine residency but also provides rigorous procedural hands-on training ensuring your success. We have 100% board certification pass rate.

There are considerable operative obstetrical experiences available for all residents interested in incorporating obstetrics into their future practice, including participation in our optional Obstetrical Training Track. Residents interested in caring for the vulnerable populations may select to participate in our Care of the Underserved Training Track. A number of our graduates pursue careers as hospitalists, and we have developed a Hospitalist Track for residents with this interest.

Residents are also well-trained in invasive procedures such as central and arterial lines, thoracentesis, paracentesis, lumbar punctures, circumcisions, and chest tubes. Outpatient procedures available to schedule for your own patients or to perform for your fellow residents’ patients include LARCs, colposcopy, cardiac treadmill, I & D’s of abscesses, and lesion removal.

Certain aspects of the curriculum are presented longitudinally throughout your training such as behavioral science, community medicine, practice management, and legal issues in medicine. There are also multiple elective opportunities available.

Tracks

We are proud to offer three optional unique training tracks in our residency program in addition to our more traditional curriculum.

Our “Medically Underserved” track recognizes the need for competent physicians who are able to offer comprehensive, compassionate and culturally sensitive care to the diverse and growing population of patients in underserved settings in the context of health and healthcare delivery in these communities.

Obstetrical track

Our “Obstetrical” track participants gain advanced experience in low- and high-risk management of obstetrical patients and increased competence in operative obstetrical procedures.

Our “Hospitalist” track for family medicine provides education, training and exposure to inpatient medicine care that surpass the required core education and training during residency. Those residents who are considering additional exposure and training in hospitalist medicine can pursue it.
