Lone Star Family Health Center Launches ‘Walk With a Doc’
Conroe, Texas, July 20, 2017 – On Tuesday, July 25th, 2017 Lone Star Family Health Center (LSFHC) will host its first ‘Walk With a Doc’ event at 7:30 pm in Candy Cane Park.
“We are working to find new ways to encourage our patients to become healthier,” says LSFHC Medical Director, Dr. Daniel Porter, “Walk with a Doc is something we can do with our patients to show we are in this effort to get healthier with them.”
As LSFHC continues to pursue its Community Centered Health Home initiative it is looking for ‘out of the box’ ways to help patients realize that good health starts outside of the clinic walls. Through this new effort, the LSFHC healthcare providers can, quite literally, walk alongside their patients toward better health.
Walking for as little as 30 minutes a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, help maintain a healthy body weight, help with mental well-being, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and Type 2 diabetes. Recently, the Surgeon General of the United States recognized walking as one of the most important things that can be done for better health. As LSFHC joins what is now an international movement with more than 300 chapters worldwide, it hopes that all members of Montgomery County, not just LSFHC patients, will show up to walk with the organizations’ healthcare providers.
“Walking is the single best thing that people can do for their health,” says Dr. Porter, “we plan to have many of our healthcare staff out next Tuesday, and we hope that the community will come as well.”
Any interested walkers can meet Dr. Porter and Nurse Taylor in Candy Cane Park (1204 Candy Cane Lane) at 7:30pm for the kickoff event.

About Walk With a Doc
Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity and now has more than 300 chapters worldwide.
