A medical home for athletes???

Sports Medicine Center, TomballMany medical and business organizations are talking now about the value of a medical home. One place where you can come and get the majority of health care you will need. A place where the staff and physicians know you and have the expertise and facilities to care for you when you are sick or injured and give you the advice and information you need to maximize your health. If you’re an active person, that place is the Lone Star Sports Medicine Clinic.

Opened in 2006 and affiliated with the Texas Sports Medicine Center in Tomball, TX., the clinic is dedicated to providing athletes and active people the expert care they demand and deserve. Scott Rand, MD, the director of the clinic, is board certified in family medicine and sports medicine. He has nearly 20 years of experience treating athletes of all ages and abilities. He is the consulting team physician for 14 area high schools, Prairie View A&M University, and the local team physician for USA Gymnastics. He is also the director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, a year long, accredited training program for family physicians to learn the skills necessary to care for athletes and become eligible to sit for the board exam for sports medicine. He lectures often in the community and writes a biweekly column for the local newspaper on sports and fitness related subjects. Dr Rand serves on national committees for sports medicine education.

The clinic offers a concierge level of service without the concierge price. We offer open access, same day appointments, e-mail communication with your physician, and evaluation and management of nearly all the medical issues that active people have. Our services include:

What’s a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship?

The Lone Star Sports Medicine Clinic is the primary training facility for physicians participating in the Conroe Family Medicine Residency Program Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Primary care doctors, including family physicians, internists and pediatricians, who have a special interest in the medical care of athletes can elect to take an additional year of training that allows them to sit for a Certificate of Added Qualifications examination offered by their respective boards.  This year of training focuses on the evaluation and management of musculoskeletal problems and issues that make athletes different as far as management of medical problems.

There are approximately 100 Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowships in the United States and currently the Texas Sports Medicine Center houses the only one in the greater Houston Area.
