A letter from the Program Director

Iwould like to thank you for your interest in the Conroe Medical Education Foundation Family Medicine Residency Program. I am thrilled that I have been given the opportunity to lead such a high quality organization, and I hope that you will join us. We have built a solid program and expect to continue providing high level residency education and patient care long into the future. We have strong faculty and residents and provide quality care, both in the office and in the hospital. Our graduates feel that the wide variety of experiences that is afforded at our program provides them with the opportunity to practice anywhere they choose, in any style of practice. We truly believe that Conroe offers an excellent learning environment and is an outstanding place to live.

I came to Conroe in 2003 as a faculty member. I would like to share my reasons for coming to Conroe in hopes that it will help you as you consider selecting a residency program. I chose Conroe because it is a place where a family physician can really take care of patients at a very high level in every area of the hospital. The residents truly get to see how much family physicians can add to the care of patients. I also chose Conroe because of the residents. We are proud that our program consistently has outstanding residents who perform extremely well. Residents are actively involved in the committees that make our program and our family medicine center function. They are a pleasure to work with. We are truly a family.

Over the past two years we increased from seven to ten residents per year. Our residents rotate through inpatient and outpatient settings in the Conroe area. We moved into our new state of the art, 70,000 square foot family medicine center which was designed and built specifically for our teaching health center model. Our faculty and residents agree that our clinic provides an exceptional environment in which to learn and care for our patients. We have 45 exam rooms, five nurse’s stations set up in a pod configuration, 7 procedure rooms, and up to date equipment, including digital x-ray, 4-D ultrasound and other diagnostic and lab services. Our clinic has used electronic health records for over 10 years and has wireless connectivity and remote access. Patient care and efficiency are enhanced because our medical records and x-rays are available from anywhere that you have web access. We also have an onsite pharmacy and provide clinical pharmacy services. Our clinic allows our residents to have unique community medicine experiences. For example, residents spend time with our adult and pediatric dentists in our dental center, and with our diabetes educator in our nutrition area, which was built to house a WIC program, diabetes and nutritional education and is the site of our teaching kitchen. We strive to offer our residents a training environment that will provide them with the same experience they will have in their own practices after graduation.

The Conroe Family Medicine Residency program was started in 1983 by the physicians in the community who recognized the need for family physicians in a rapidly growing and medically underserved county. Many of those physicians are still involved as board members and as community faculty. We therefore have strong support from the local medical community.

Our graduates practice in a variety of settings; urban, rural, suburban, inpatient, outpatient and urgent care, and they are recruited both locally and nationally by physicians and hospitals into their large groups and small practices. We were even selected as the inpatient hospitalist group for a Medicare Advantage plan based on the quality and efficiency of our care.

Thank you for your interest in the Conroe Family Medicine Residency Program. We are proud of what we have to offer to our residents, our faculty and our community. We hope that you will become part of our family in Conroe.

Sincerely,

Stephen L. McKernan, BS Pharmacy, ND, DO FAAFP
