Stephen L. McKernan, BS Pharmacy, ND, DO, FAAFPDr. McKernan was a Clinical Pharmacist prior to medical school. He continued that practice while he attended Naturopathic school In Oregon. He decided to go on to become an osteopathic physician and moved to Florida to attend a school that had a strong osteopathic manipulation curriculum. He did an AOA internship at one of the school’s affiliated hospitals and then did an ACGME residency in Modesto, well known for being strong in procedures and OB. Following residency he went into practice in Oakdale and Riverbank, California, two small towns at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where he also raised organic cherries and almonds on a small farm. He continued in private practice for 8 years in California while teaching as a community faculty at the residency in Modesto. He was a national speaker, most often on topics related to alternative medicine. In 2000 he was recruited to a full time position as faculty and residency program director, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, MO. In 2003, he joined the Conroe Family Medicine Residency as a faculty member and shortly thereafter became Medical Director at Lone Star Family Health Center, the teaching clinic for the program. In August 2006, he was selected as Program Director for the Conroe Family Medicine Residency Program and Sports Medicine Fellowship and CEO of Lone Star Family Health Center. He currently has appointments as adjunct faculty at UTMB and UNTHSC.

He has held leadership positions at various hospitals, including department chair, P&T committee chair and chief of staff. He has sat on various hospital committees, served as president and as a board member of IPA’s.

He has been active in the community, currently serving as a board member for Heart of Montgomery County. He is a graduate Leadership Montgomery County, class of 2007.
